The fear of the Lord is not the fear that pushes us away from God—it is the awe that draws us close enough to know His heart.
Many people want intimacy with God, but few realize where intimacy begins. It does not begin with information, religious activity, or even Bible knowledge. It begins with a healthy fear of the Lord—a deep awe, reverence, and surrender to who He is.
Psalm 139 reveals a staggering truth: God already knows us completely. He knows our thoughts, our words before we speak them, our struggles, desires, and motives. He has searched us out and pursued us with relentless love. His desire has never been distant observation; His desire has always been an intimate relationship.
Yet intimacy is a two-way relationship. Just as God seeks to know us deeply, He invites us to seek Him deeply. Moses prayed, “Teach me Your ways so I may know You.” He wanted more than God’s blessings; he wanted God’s heart.
The fear of the Lord purifies our motives and removes the distractions that keep us distant. It shifts our focus from what God can do for us to who God is. Holy fear awakens a desire to know Him, listen to Him, follow Him, and walk closely with Him. The truth is simple: God has already drawn near to us.
The question is, how close do we want to be to Him?
Today's Prayer
Jesus, thank You for pursuing me with a love that is beyond my understanding. You know me completely, yet You still desire relationship with me. Forgive me for the times I have allowed distractions, fear, and self-interest to keep me distant from You. Grow within me a healthy awe and reverence for You that purifies my motives and draws me closer to Your heart. Teach me Your ways so that I may know You more deeply and walk with You more intimately each day. In Your name, Jesus, Amen.
Today's Activation
Today, spend ten uninterrupted minutes with God—not asking for anything. Open your spiritual ear to His Voice. Listen, and simply ask: “Lord, what is on Your heart today, and how can I draw closer to You?”
