Repentance turns us toward the righteousness God gives
Key Scriptures: Romans 1:16–17; Romans 2:4; Acts 3:19; Romans 3:21–26; Romans 6:11–13
Key Truth: God’s kindness leads us to repentance. As we turn from sin and self-reliance to Jesus, we receive by faith the righteousness He gives. His Spirit then empowers us to walk in the life He has made ours.
The Gospel is the power of God for salvation, and in the Gospel God’s righteousness is revealed (Romans 1:16–17). We cannot make ourselves righteous through effort, religious activity, or good intentions. Righteousness is a gift, received through faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 3:21–26).
How, then, do we respond when God reveals where we have been resisting Him? Scripture says that His kindness leads us to repentance (Romans 2:4). Repentance is our grace-enabled response: we agree with God, turn from sin and self-rule, and turn toward Jesus. We stop hiding behind our own explanations and trust the mercy and truth He gives.
Repentance does not purchase righteousness. We do not earn God’s acceptance by turning well enough. We turn because His grace has reached us, and by faith we receive what Jesus has done. As Peter preached, “Repent, then, and turn to God” (Acts 3:19). Repentance and faith turn us toward the One who forgives, restores, and makes us right with Himself.
This turning continues as our relationship with God grows. The Holy Spirit keeps revealing where our thoughts, desires, and choices need to come under Jesus’ Lordship. As He speaks, we learn to agree with Him and follow. This is living a Life of Repentance. We are not trying to earn a closer place with Jesus; we are responding to Jesus Who has brought us near.
Paul therefore calls believers to consider themselves alive to God in Christ and to present themselves to Him as instruments of righteousness (Romans 6:11–13). We do not yield in order to be saved. We yield because Jesus has brought us from death to life. His power works in us as we trust Him, repent, and obey.
Reflection: Where is Jesus inviting me to agree with and turn to Him?
Activation: Name the area’s where you have been resisting Jesus or relying on your own way. Confess it honestly, receive His mercy, and take a step with Him in obedience by responsing to what He has shown you. This is how His power works through us.
The Gospel brings us near to Jesus and gives us a new place to stand. He does not leave us to live this new Life through our own strength. He promised the Holy Spirit to fill and empower us.
