Hypocrisy is dangerous because it can look spiritual on the outside while protecting self on the inside.
Ananias and Sapphira did not fall because they gave an offering. Giving to God is holy and beautiful. Their issue was motive. They wanted the appearance of surrender without the truth of surrender. They wanted people to see sacrifice, while God saw self-protection.
Jesus called hypocrisy leaven because it spreads. If it is not confronted, hypocrisy quietly works its way through our motives, our words, our worship, our attempts to lead effectively, and our relationships. We can say the right thing and still be driven by the wrong spirit. We can serve, give, worship, preach, lead, or compliment others while secretly craving approval, protection, recognition, or control.
That is why Jesus tells us to fear God, not people. The fear of man traps us in image management. The fear of the Lord brings us back to truth. Holy fear keeps us honest before God. It reminds us that nothing hidden stays hidden forever. Not one motive is invisible to Him. But God does not expose our hearts to shame us—He exposes them to purify us.
The voice of the Holy Spirit cuts deeper than behavior. It discerns thoughts and intentions. It reveals where we are performing rather than surrendering, pleasing people rather than obeying God, and protecting our image rather than walking in truth.
Today's Prayer
Jesus, forgive us for every place we have sought approval, recognition, or protection from people more than truth before You. Expose every false motive and purify our hearts. Fill us with holy fear so we listen and follow You; allow You to love people through us, and reveal Truth to them, not performance. We make You our source, not human approval. In Your name, Jesus, Amen.
Today's Activation
Holy fear keeps our motives clean and protects us from the deception of appearing surrendered while holding back from God. Today, ask the Holy Spirit: “Where am I managing an image instead of walking in Your Truth?” Then follow one Spirit-led act of obedience that surrenders our protected image on the altar.
