The spirit of fear makes us hide from God, but the fear of the Lord draws us closer to His presence, His voice, and His truth.
There are two kinds of fear that shape our relationship with God—and only one leads to life. The spirit of fear makes us pull back, hide, and keep a distance from God. It is the same fear Adam felt in the garden after he sinned. That fear says, “Stay away from God and others. Cover yourself. Put on a mask. Don’t get too close to God and others; they will hurt you.”
But the fear of the Lord is different. It is not terror of God—it is awe of Him. It is not running from Him—it is clinging to Him. When God met Israel at Mount Sinai, the people backed away, but Moses drew near. Moses understood what they did not: holy fear does not push us away from God; it pulls us closer. The fear of the Lord is a deep awareness of who God is—His holiness, authority, beauty, and love. It produces a heart that says, “I don’t want anything separating me from Him. I’m afraid to live without His presence.”
It is not asking, “How close can I get to sin?” It is asking, “How close can I stay to God?” This kind of fear guards our life, produces obedience, keeps our hearts tender, and protects intimacy. God did not deliver us just to get us out of bondage and trouble. He delivered us to bring us to Himself, to be free to be His children. Holy fear is the posture that keeps us close.
Today's Prayer
Jesus, thank You for delivering us from the spirit of fear through Your perfect love. Place within us a deep, holy fear—a reverent awe of who You are. Teach us not to withdraw from You, but to draw near to You. Anchor our hearts in Your presence. Purify our desires, guard us from sin, and deepen our intimacy with You. We want to know You, walk with You, and remain close to You. In Your name, Jesus, Amen.
Today's Activation
Today, ask yourself, “Is this fear pushing me away from God or pulling me closer to Him?” Then be intentional and step into intense, passionate prayer, obedience, or surrender that draws you nearer to His presence.
