When I become overly concerned about what other people are saying about me, it can reveal that their voice has begun to carry more weight in me than it should.
The concern itself is not necessarily wrong. We should be humble enough to receive correction, care about our witness, and listen when trusted people speak truth. But when I become preoccupied with how I am perceived, feel compelled to defend myself, replay conversations, or need others to think well of me in order to be at peace, it may expose the fear of man.
Proverbs 29:25 says, “The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD shall be safe.”
A helpful question is not simply, “What are they saying about me?” but: “Why does what they are saying have so much authority over what is happening inside of me?”
Their words may be revealing an area where my identity is still being interpreted through people rather than through Jesus. Freedom comes when I can sincerely ask Jesus, “Is there anything in what they are saying that You want me to hear?” If there is, I obey Him. If there is not, I release it.
Then the issue is no longer whether people approve of me. The issue becomes: Am I surrendered to Jesus, and does His voice have the final word concerning who I am?
That is the difference between being teachable before people and being governed by people.
