What Is Holy Fear?

Holy fear is often misunderstood. Many think it means being afraid of God or shrinking back from Him. But scriptural Holy fear does the opposite—it draws us closer. It is not terror that pushes us away; it is awe that pulls us near. Life expands around us and in us.

Holy fear is reverence for who God is. It is recognizing His holiness, power, goodness, and authority. It means honoring Him above every person, desire, opinion, or possession. When we fear the Lord, we begin to care about what He cares about. We love what He loves, and we hate what He hates. Sin no longer looks harmless. Obedience no longer feels optional.

Holy fear also produces integrity. It causes our outward life to match our inward heart. We stop pretending. We stop compromising. We become people who desire truth in thought, word, and action.

The beautiful truth is that holy fear is not bondage—it is protection. It guards us from deception, pride, and destructive choices. It frees us from lesser fears, especially the fear of people. When God becomes the One we honor most, the opinions of others lose their control over us.

The fear of the Lord is also the beginning of wisdom. It positions us to hear His voice, receive direction, and walk closely with Him. Those who revere God discover that His presence is not something to avoid—it is the safest place to live. Regardless of it being a command or not, God’s preferences take a front seat in our awe and devotion of Him.

So, ask yourself today: What holds the highest place in my heart? What influences my decisions more—God’s Word or the world’s approval? Am I hearing His voice, confirming His Will, unifying with His Body, supporting community and living out my identity in Christ?

When we place God where He belongs, everything else begins to come into proper order.

Pray: Jesus, teach us the beauty of Holy fear. Help us honor You more than anything else. Help us love what You love and turn away from what displeases You. Shape our thoughts, words, and actions so they reflect Your holiness. Deliver us from every lesser fear and draw us closer to Your presence. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Question: What is one area of your life where God is inviting you to honor Him more deeply today?
