True leadership is not the ability to persuade people to follow us, but the willingness to die to ourselves so completely that Christ is free to lead others through us. The greatest leaders are not those who impose their will but those who continually surrender their will to Jesus, allowing the His Spirit to reproduce His Life in and through them.

Ask yourself honestly: Am I leading people toward my way, or am I helping them discover His Way?

There is an enormous difference.

Most conflict in homes, churches, businesses, and friendships is not caused by evil people. It is caused by sincere people believing their own way is best.

Leadership becomes exhausting when we believe
everyone must think like us before unity can exist.

Jesus presents another way.
He invites us to die.

Our Human Paradox
Isaiah reminds us, “My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord (Isaiah 55:8–9).

Our fallen nature instinctively resists correction while simultaneously attempting to correct everyone else. We dislike someone telling us what to do. Yet we often expect spouses, children, employees, church members, and friends to conform to our preferences.

This is the fruit of self.

From Genesis 3 onward humanity has lived under one continual deception: “My way can be as good as God’s.” The Gospel completely destroys that illusion.

Jesus did not come merely to forgive us.
He came to crucify the independent life.


Activate:
Today, Jesus is not merely asking us to improve our leadership; He is inviting us to surrender our lives. Before we can lead others to His will, we must first allow Him to lead us.

Take a moment to quietly ask the Lord these questions:
• Where am I insisting on my own way instead of trusting Yours?
• Have I confused my preferences with Your truth?
• Am I trying to change people, or am I allowing Your Spirit to transform me first?
• Is my leadership pointing others toward me, or is it helping them hear and follow You?
• Is there a relationship where You are calling me to humble myself, forgive, serve, or simply listen?

Now respond to what the His Spirit is revealing to you through loving conviction.

Lay your opinions, ambitions, offenses, and desire to be right at the foot of the Cross. Repent wherever self has occupied the throne of your heart. Invite Jesus to once again become the Lord of your thoughts, your words, your decisions, and your leadership.

Commit yourself to these three daily disciplines:
1. Surrender — Begin each day by yielding your plans, expectations, and personal agenda to Jesus, praying, “Not my will, but Yours be done.”
2. Listen — Spend intentional time in His presence and develop your ear to His voice and pray in unity with Him. Ask Him to fill you afresh and give you ears to hear His voice above every other voice.
3. Obey — Respond immediately to whatever He reveals. Faith is not merely believing what Jesus says; faith is hearing His voice and following Him in unquestioned obedience.

Remember, the goal is not for people to admire your leadership. The goal is for them to encounter Jesus through your life.

When Jesus becomes greater and self becomes less, leadership is no longer about control—it becomes a living witness of His humility, His love, His peace, and His power.

Closing Prayer: Jesus, we surrender our will, our opinions, our preferences, and our desire to be right. Crucify everything in us that competes with Your Lordship. Renew our mind by Your Living Word and fill us afresh with Your Spirit. Teach us to listen carefully, trust completely, and obey immediately. Make our lives a living testimony of Your humility, love, and servant heart. May those we lead be drawn, not to us, but to You in us. Let Your way become our only way, Your thoughts become our thoughts, and Your will become our greatest joy. In Your name Jesus, Amen.
