Evidence That Our First Love for Jesus Is Waning

by | Mar 17, 2026

One of the clearest indicators that our love for Jesus has begun to fade is when our relationship with Him shifts from a passion to be with Him and for Him to merely working for Him and seeking His approval.

Instead of devotion flowing from intimacy, it becomes driven by activity.
• We begin to measure faithfulness by how much we do, rather than by how deeply we remain connected to Him.
• We continue to serve, but we are no longer soaking in His presence.
• We labor in ministry, yet we no longer desire simply to be with Him.
• We become busy with religious responsibilities, while our relationship with Him quietly grows distant.

This is how spiritual burnout begins.

Burnout is rarely the result of simply doing too much. More often, it happens when we are doing things apart from hearing His voice. When we move ahead of Jesus instead of following Him, we begin to carry burdens He never gave us to carry, simply because we are entertaining other voices instead of His voice.

We end up:

  • pursuing visions, He never spoke,
  • building ministries shaped by our gifting rather than His direction,
  • and striving in our own strength instead of identifying with His cross and His ministry of reconciliation.

In that place, even good activity becomes heavy because it is not God activity.

Jesus made it clear: “My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

When what we are carrying feels crushing, exhausting, or overwhelming, it is often a sign that we have picked up responsibilities that never came from His voice but another voice laced with leaven, a slight deviation from Truth.

True devotion is not proven by how much we accomplish for Jesus, but by how closely we remain aligned with Him—hearing His voice, walking in His presence, and allowing His life to flow through us.

Only from that place of intimacy does ministry remain life-giving instead of draining, and love remain fresh instead of fading.
