What God Treasures in Us

by | Apr 8, 2026

The fear of the Lord is God’s greatest treasure and virtue we can pursue and apprehend. It is the key to a fulfilled, successful, and meaningful life. It is described as the foundation of wisdom, character, protection, provision, and true happiness.

King Solomon showed both the power and the danger surrounding this virtue, when he embraced the fear of God, he walked in extraordinary wisdom, success, peace, and influence. When he drifted from it, trusting his own wisdom instead, his life fell into emptiness, cynicism, and despair. When he returned to it, he concluded that fearing God and obeying Him is the whole purpose of man (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

The fear of the Lord is not terror, but a holy reverence; an awe of God that keeps us connected to God’s wisdom, submitted to truth and aligned with His purpose.

It is so valuable that Scripture calls it both God’s delight and His treasure (Isaiah 33:6). When we make it our treasure as well, it keeps us on the path of life, produces intimacy with God, and transforms us into the image of Christ.

The fear of the Lord is the essential virtue that sustains life, guards the heart, and leads to lasting fulfillment—without it, even the wisest can fall; with it, we remain anchored in God.
