WHAT IF JESUS IS WAITING FOR ME THERE?

by | Sep 16, 2026

What if the person I keep overlooking is where Jesus is waiting for me? James makes a startling statement: “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble…” — James 1:27 NKJV

Why them? Why does God repeatedly draw our attention to the widow, the fatherless, and the stranger? Maybe because they expose something in us.
• The widow has lost companionship and covering.
• The fatherless has lost protection, guidance, and advocacy.
• The stranger has lost familiarity, community, and belonging.

Different circumstances. Same painful vulnerability: Who sees me? Who will come near? Do I matter to anyone? Do I belong anywhere? And these are precisely the people God tells us He sees. “He administers justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the stranger…” — Deuteronomy 10:18 NKJV

Here is where this becomes uncomfortable. We can spend our lives asking Jesus: “Where are You?” – “Why aren’t You showing me how much You love me?” – “Why don’t I feel closer to You?” And perhaps Jesus is answering: “I am closer than you think. Look again.”
• What if He is standing in the loneliness of the widow?
• What if He is waiting in the insecurity of the fatherless?
• What if He is hidden inside the uncomfortable interruption of the stranger?

What if I have been asking Jesus to reveal Himself to me while repeatedly walking past the very places He has chosen to reveal His heart? Jesus said: “Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.” — Matthew 25:40 NKJV

That changes everything. Pure religion isn’t merely doing something for vulnerable people. It is seeing Jesus in everything—and especially in people. Perhaps the widow, orphan, and stranger are not just opportunities for us to demonstrate compassion. Perhaps they are invitations into fellowship with the heart of Jesus. Because they often cannot repay us. They cannot necessarily increase our influence. They may never recognize our sacrifice. There may be absolutely nothing in it for us—except Jesus.

And maybe that is why the encounter is so pure. We thought blessing meant Jesus giving something to us. What if the greatest blessing is Jesus trusting us enough to love someone through us. And while He is loving them through us, something extraordinary happens: We begin experiencing His heart ourselves. This is the greatest blessing!
• So today, perhaps the question isn’t: “Jesus, where are You?”
• Maybe the question is: “Jesus, who have I been walking past?” Because the person I keep overlooking may be the very place Jesus is waiting for me.

KEY TRUTH
Pure religion begins when we stop looking only for Jesus to meet us in our need and begin recognizing Him waiting for us in someone else’s.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I HEAR HIM?

Prayer and true fellowship with Jesus connect directly to trembling at His voice because it reveals the difference between hearing Him and responding to Him. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” — (John 10:27 NKJV) Jesus gives us a simple...

When I become overly concerned about what other people are saying about me, it can reveal that their voice has begun to carry more weight in me than it should. The concern itself is not necessarily wrong. We should be humble enough to receive correction, care about...
